On Passive Theory and the Development of Generative Grammar

Chomsky＇s generative grammar is a typical explanatory linguistic theory, which has experienced five different stages up to now. It takes explanatory adequacy as its final aim. Through analyzing the way this theory dealt with the English passive at its different phases, this paper provides us with a general idea on how generative grammar strives toward this aim step by step.
