The 2008 List of China’s Top 200 Importers and Exporters has been issued by China Customs Monthly and the Department of Policy and Legal Affairs, the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China. China’s import and export value totaled USD 2.5615 trillion in 2008, which is 123 times as much as in 1978. The annual growth rate rolled back to 17.8%, decreasing by 5.7 percentage points. As fi rms around the country suffered from the impact of the global economic downturn, this marked the fi rst time that the rate was lower than 20% since 2001 when the country entered the WTO. In 2008, China’s exports rose by 17.2% over the value from 2007 to a total of USD 1.4285 billion with 207,000 fi rms engaged in export business, which is 13,000 more than in 2007. The country’s imports rose to USD 1.13309 trillion, an annual rise of 18.5%. The average export scale of the top 200 exporters rose by USD 200 million over the previous year to USD 1.84 billion in 2008. And the average import scale of the top 200 importers rose year on year by USD 390 million to USD 2.24 billion. Though the global economic crisis slowed China’s foreign trade, both exports and imports, it also provided opportunities for Chinese fi rms to fi x some of their weaknesses, and some of the successful ones even enlarged their market shares. Thirty-seven fi rms were listed among the top 200 importers for the fi rst time as were 42 of the top 200 exporters.
