在沈从文创作最旺盛的年代,他的头脑中始终有着"经典重造"的焦虑,这种焦虑从他要求作家应具有的创作态度,他对写作技巧的重视,他对作品产生的社会作用的期待,以及他用时间来评判文学作品的价值,要求文学作品像传统经典一样经得起时间的考验等方面表现出来。产生这种"经典重造"焦虑的原因,首先是沈从文认为传统经典在新时期里已失去了意义,其次是他相信文学作品能产生重造社会的作用,第三是他对国家、民族及社会有责任感。
