Objective To investigate the effect of almonds on oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation induced by smoking. Methods Sixty male smokers aged 18-25 were recruited and divided into two groups (n = 30 ). A randomized, placebo - controlled ( 100 g pork providing calories equal to the almond intake ) , cross - over clinical trial was conducted. Almonds (84 g/d) were added to the diet for 4 weeks. 8 -OHdG and MDA in 24 h urine were analyzed by HPLC, peripheral lymphocyte DNA strand breaks by comet assay. Results After almond consumption, urinary 8 - OHdG and MDA, peripheral lymphocyte DNA strand breaks were significandy decreased by 28% , 23% and 34% respectively. Serum vitamin E was significantly increased by 10%. Conclusion These results indicate that the consumption of almonds can diminish smoking - related oxidative DNA damage and lipid peroxidation.
