A Survey of Carlyle Studies after the 1940s

英国19世纪著名的文学家、社会评论家之一托马斯.卡莱尔的声誉经历了数次的起起伏伏。直至20世纪后半叶开始,卡莱尔丰富深刻的思想才重新受到西方学者的关注。国内学者对卡莱尔的关注点主要集中在他的英雄史观和他对其他文学大家的影响和启发上,对卡莱尔有关社会和谐、有机发展方面的深刻思想未能给予足够的关注。

Thomas Carlyle, one of the most famous literary figures and social critics in Victorian England, had enjoyed ups and downs in terms of his reputation. His profound and in-depth thoughts were not reasonably valued by the Western critics until after the 1940s. Modern Chinese scholars are mostly interested in Carlyle＇s concept of heroism and his influence on other important literary figures. Little attention has been given to Carlyle＇s brilliant thoughts on organic and harmonious development of the society.
