Drama development is always related to social and economic factors, and so is the Ming Dynasty drama development. Based on an analysis of the impact of the early Ming ruling policy on the development of drama during this period and afterwards, the relationship is clarified between a series of policies such as the ban of drama, the imperial examination system, the sole focus on neo-Confucianism, the connivance of seigniors indulging in carnal pleasure and the forbidding of officials to visit prostitutes and such phenomena as the vacancy of early Ming drama writing, the appearance of seigniors as dramatists, scholars becoming dramatists, and catamites playing female roles.
