In 2007, China’s automotive aftermarket entered a phase of rapid growth. This is expected to be a market worth RMB 300 billion by 2010, making it the second-largest in Asia after Japan. Profit margins in the automotive after-sales service segment run as high as 40%, an average of 13% higher than comparable markets in Europe and North America. In China, the gas station industry represents a significant demand and untapped market for automobile repair and maintenance. As car ownership becomes more commonplace, the nationwide vehicle population will soar, spurring rapid growth in the automotive service industry. Given the vast potential of China’s automotive aftermarket, as well as the prospect of fierce competition and dwindling profits in oil product sales, gas stations are ideally positioned to seize this opportunity. The industry is advised to play to its strengths, learn from the examples of developed countries, pursue research, and formulate rational strategies. Corporations should prioritize and explore the development of aftermarket services as part of their long-term competitive strategies.
