An Analysis of Self-pursuit through Double-Self in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness

Joseph Conrad,the prestigious British novelist, portrayed two remarkable characters through his unique narrative techniques in the Heart of Darkness. He expressed more about the process of self-pursuit by the way of Conrad＇s double self in the novel than merely his perspective over the European colonialism. At the end of the novel,the death of Kurtz,one self of Conrad,proclaimed the lost of Marlowe,another self of his. This exposed the contradiction between one＇s goal and his pursuit under the conditions of capitalism and social Darwinism. Therefore ,the efforts to construct one＇s subjectivity through his double-serf are futile.
