摘要
约翰生的《英语词典》是现代英语词典的开山之作,一直深受学界关注。近20年来国外关于这部词典的研究异常活跃,并取得了重大进展。理论上,新的研究表明,约翰生词典是一部包含百科性特点的语文词典,其编纂方法既有规定主义特征,也有描写主义倾向,这些特点对现代英语词典有直接的影响。方法论上,新的研究重视对词典文本信息的统计分析、对词典版本和手稿的对比研究。文章最后指出,约翰生的语义观和语用观,以及释义原则和方法值得进一步研究。
Samuel Johnson＇s A Dictionary of the English Language （1755）, which is a milestone in English lexicography, has aroused widespread interest in the academic world for a long time. For the past twenty years the study of the Dictionary abroad has been actively and greatly developed. Theoretically, the latest studies show that Johnson＇s Dictionary is a general dictionary with encyclopedic characteristics; its compilation is characterized by descriptivism as well as prescriptivism, which have a direct effect on modern English lexicography. Methodologically, the latest studies emphasize the statistical analysis of information in the Dictionary itself and the comparative analysis of manuscripts and versions. Finally the paper points out that Johnson＇s semantic and pragmatic ideas and his definition theory and practice deserve further study.
