The Functional Approach in Translation of Famous Novels

本文将《飘》的两种中文译本进行了对比,其中一种是同化策略使用的代表,另一种则是异化策略使用的典型,但由于两者只是单纯地使用一种策略,因此都不是完美的中文译本。文章同时分析了《红楼梦》的英译本,此译本是根据翻译的目的,将同化与异化策略进行交替使用,从而使读者更好地理解了原著的精髓。总之,功能翻译理论就是要求译者在翻译时不仅要忠实于原著,还要如实地考虑到读者的文化背景。

It is debatable to apply foreignization or domestication in translation among translators or critics. Professor Sun Zhili issues his research paper entitled China＇ s Literary Translation. Tending from Domestication to Foreignization in the Jan. 2002 of Chinese Translators Journal. He claims that the translating of Chinese literature in the 21st century will be predominated by foreignization. However, to rebut the standpoint of Mr. Sun, Mr. Cai Ping publishes his paper that is Translation Should Apply Domestication Mainly in the May 2002 of Chinese Translatots Journal. It is so interested that both of them ended in a neutral conclusion. Professor Sun Zhili states that＂it should notice the limitation of applying foreignization ; when foreignization is not suitable for translation, it should turn to domestication-- these two ways are complemented＂. And Mr. Cai Ping points out that ＂foreignization and domestication are complementary methods in translation rather than repelled and opposed concepts＂. From their point of view, it seems that both of them try to seek the compromise between foreignization and domestication in some extent. But it is still not clear that how to issue foreignization and domestication.
