人类交际是语言交际和非语言交际的结合。在跨文化交际中,非语言交际行为特别是沉默在表达自己的思想和感情、传送各种信息中具有重要的作用。中西方文化对沉默的理解和使用中的差异,使得沉默容易引起文化误解和文化冲突。这种文化误解和冲突在语言交流、餐桌礼仪以及商务谈判中均有所表现。当然,在不同文化背景中沉默也具有一些相同或相似的语用功能,如惩罚他人、传情达意、表明态度和追求静寂等。

Silence is a kind of nonverbal communication medium that is in common used globally. Because of the cultural differences in understanding and using it, silence is easily arouse cultural misunderstanding and cultural shock during the intercultural communication. This paper is aimed at analyzing silence in the background of the intercultural communication and revealing it＇s alike and differences indifferent cultures so that we can help people use silence to carry out intercultural communication more smoothly and successfully.
