This paper concludes that the tragedy of Razumov--the protagonist of Conrad' s novel Under Western Eyes, results from his own double personality. Razumov is confronted with several kinds of pressures : being puzzled over fixing his own identity, being trapped in the conflicts between reason and emotion, being uncertain about his political stand when facing Russia's autocracy and people' s revolution. Forced by the above stresses, Razumov gradually splits up into a tragic homo duplex. Through this novel, Conrad criticizes that the political violence of a nation presses individual life, and reveals his moral concern about individual survival.
