The Theme of Mountain Imagery in Stendhal's Le Rouge et le Noir

司汤达是19世纪法国批判现实主义著名作家,在法国乃至世界文学史上都有着非常重要的地位。他的长篇小说代表作《红与黑》更是文学界的经典。加拿大文学批评家诺斯洛普·弗莱在《神力的语言》一书中认为高山意象及其变体是一组向上的形象,象征着更高一级的生存状态。本文以此为理论依据,从《红与黑》中的高山意象和梯子意象着手,对主人公于连的梦想追求、人生状态及小说的主题进行了分析。

Stendhal, one of the greatest critical realist writer of the 19th century in France, has high place in the history of French literature and world literature. His masterpiece, the river novel Le Rouge et le Noir, is a classic in the literary world. Northrop Frye is a famous literary critic of Canada. In his composition Word with Power, Frye point out that the mountain imagery as well as it＇s variants is the image represented the state of upwards and onwards and is a symbol of better survival condition in people＇ s life. This thesis＇ s standpoint is based on Frye＇ s theory. In this thesis, the author analyzes the dramatis personae Julien＇ s dream and life, as well as the theme of the novel, by analyzing the mountain imagery and the ladder imagery in the novel.
