"Islander anxiety" in Japanese national mentality has gained much attention in the academic field of anthropology and ethnography. However, what is the specific structure of myth behind the so-called islander anxiety, what is its embodiment in Japanese culture and internal psychological mechanism? This paper tries to make a tentative study on two cultural forms in Japanese popular culture from the perspective of national collective psychoanalysis, that is, horror movies and robot animation. These two cultural forms are not only the most common disposable commodity of popular culture in Japan, but important products of export-oriented consumption of Japanese popular culture.
