Trifles is the short story that she later first dramatic work of the American writer Susan Glaspell. A Jury of Her Peers is a adapted from that play. The characters in the two works are the same and the plots essentially Mike. Nevertheless, in the process of rewriting the play the author made some alterations, including some omissions and additions of the plot, which enabled the short story to present a different artistic effect from the original play. Many scholars, home and abroad, have studied the two works from different perspectives, yet among whom few have focused their study on the irony in both works. On the basis of reading and referring to the research of many experts, the author of the present thesis studies the brilliant rewriting skills of Susan Glaspell through a comparative study of the irony in these twin writings. The author of the present thesis concludes that the adaptation presents the reader a short story whose theme is more profound and whose irony is sharper and more thought provoking than those of the original play.
