A review, with 32 references, is given on polymer encapsulated packings for high performance liquid chromatography. These new type packings were developed to overcome the shortcomings and to maintain the main advantages of both organic polymer and inorganic supports. The polymer types on the supports were polyhydrocarbons, polyethers, polyamides, polysaccharides, polypepides, polynucleotides, polyamines, polysiloxanes etc., and the base material included silica, alumina, titania, zirconia and porous graphited carbon. Polymer encapsulated stationary phase can be used in all chromatographic modes, for example, reversed-phase chromatography, ion-exchange chromatography, chiral stationary phase, supercritical fluid chromatography, size-exclusion chromatography, and affinity chromatography.
