The historical origin of story-telling and ballad singing in Suzhou dialect can be traced back to the16 and 17 centuries in the late Ming Dynasty, and from its birth, this art displayed the modern cultural features by absorbing the culture of Suzhou and getting immersed in the emerging thoughts since the late Ming Dynasty. The commercial stimulus is the most direct and effective driving force for its development, however, business competition has also produced some side effects. The elegancy and exquisiteness in the Suzhou culture has determined its artistic style and aesthetic delight, therefore, this art, full of regional features, has become the very important cultural symbol in Suzhou and even in the areas south of the Yangtze River.
