Virginia Woolf wrote in an age when readers grew in number from elites to common people. She, instead of being a literary snob, took them as an active collective public, acknowledging their subjectivity and initiative as well as their communicative relationship with the author and the text. Such ideas are well reflected in her last novel Between the Acts. Based on a detailed textual analysis, following the clue of pageant in the novel, this article tries to show Woolf' s holistic thinking about art's reception and the underlying reasons.
