Edward P. Jones' works represent new traits of contemporary African American literature. His novels and short stories based on the daily lives of African Americans in the 19th century slavery times or in the 20th century metropolis, explore the common social and human problems, and uncover the complex humanity trapped in historical entanglements or moral dilemmas. His writing style is unique. His novels look like the assembly of short stories and short stories seem like miniatures of novels. Scenarios are minimized, details and narratives loosely and nonlinearly presented, and narrative points of view constantly shifted. Jones' works combine multiple literary traditions and become a new milestone of current African American literature.
