As one of the major birth places of the Tea-Zen culture in China, the West Lake witnessed the simultaneous rise of the Chinese tea and Zen cultures during the Tang Dynasty and their prosperity during the Song Dynasty. The evolution of Longjing Tea has provided an important example of the orderly inheritance of the Tea-Zen culture in China. Scholar-officials, monks, and those Tea-Zen activities conducted around the West Lake during the Tang & Song Dynasties held a crucially leading position to the evolution of the Tea-Zen culture in China. Their exchange activities with tea, Zen, and poems as the major contents were practiced from the perspective of aesthetics to reflect the "Taste Zen in Tea" idea. The aesthetics and ideological level of the Tea-Zen culture thus created have had far-reaching and profound influence on the evolution of the Tea-Zen culture in later ages and in neighboring countries such as Japan and Korea.
