Objective:To analyze the abusing potential of combined use of buprenorphine with, diazepam and promethazine in Yunnan. Methods: An investigation was conducted among users of buprenorphine plus diazepam and promethazine with a selfdesigned questionnaire to collect data concerning multiple drug use and with Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) to get the information of the experience from using the drugs, the results of which were compared among heroin, buprenorphine and the combined drug users. Results: There was statistical significance (P = 0. 001 )between the frequency of initial use and the frequency of regular use in multiple drug users, the frequency and quantity of buprenorphine use increased as the time of abuse went on. 66.9% of the combined users experienced withdrawal symptoms when reducing the dose or discontinuing drug use. Significant differences were observed among the users using heroin alone, buprenorphine alone and comhined users by VAS (P 〈 0. 01 ). Since buprenorphine plus diazepam and promethazine abuse started in 1992, the number of abusers has been increasing year by year. Conclusion: Buprenorphine plus diazepam and promethazine can produce abusing potential of the drugs. We suggest that the administration of these drugs should be enhanced and monitoring of such drugs should be conducted to avoid their abuse.
