车师(姑师)是汉文史籍对突厥语o■uz(乌护,乌古斯)一词的音译,应读作gūsī/gūzī。o■uz的本意为"初乳",乌孙国为其源头。该部族的得名及其狼图腾文化的形成,与汉代乌孙首领猎骄靡婴幼时为狼所哺养的神奇经历密切相关。其后,进而演变为包含有24个部落的部族名称。其中分布在东部天山地区的8个部落后以"滑""八滑""滑国""八部"或"高车"等名见诸于史籍,民众则以o■uz的略音便译形式"滑"或"车"为姓。乌古斯属蒙古人种,是部落及人口最多的一个突厥语部族,也是构成前突厥汗国和回鹘汗国的主体部族。
