On the Internationalization of Shanghai Modern Architecture-A Case Study on the Three Constructions of Shanghai Custom House

上海外滩的海关从1857年建立之后经历了两次重建,从表面上看只是建筑体量和建筑形态发生了变化,但实际上却反映了上海建筑走出传统、走向现代的历程。在这一过程中,建筑师的设计理念、社会的价值取向和公众的审美趣味都发生了深刻变化。我们将这种变化解释为中国近代开放城市中的公共建筑从民族性走向国际性的必由之路。

Shanghai Custom House has been rebuilt twice since established in 1857 on the Bund, from the first generation of timber Chinese structure to the second generation of Tudor style building, and then the present building completed in 1927. Three constructions of the building show the evolution of Shanghai architecture from vernacular to modern, associated with the transition of architectural design concept, social value and public aesthetic taste, which could be regarded as the way heading to internationalization of Chinese cities in modern times.
