在近代中西文化交流方面,福州的贡献是独特的。林则徐提出"师夷长技以制夷"的口号;福建巡抚徐继畲作《环瀛志略》一书,全面介绍世界各国;马尾船政学堂的建立,是中国最早引进西方科技体系的尝试,为近代中国科学技术的发展奠定了基础;在船政学者中,严复翻译《天演论》、《法意》等西方社会政治学名著,使中国人认识到"物竞天择,适者生存"的残酷现实,从而推动了清末的维新运动;而林纾与船政学堂人士合作,翻译了大量的西洋名著,给中国文人展示了西方文学世界;他们的贡献为铸就新一代中国人奠定了文化基础。此外,在法国生活的陈季同,用法文介绍中国的传统文化,在沟通中西文化交流方面做出了卓越的贡献。

Fuzhou has made great contribution in cultural communication between China and the West in modem times. A case in point is Lin Zexu＇s catchword： ＂To learn from foreigners to restrain them＇and Fujian circuit inspector, Xu Jishe＇s book Coastal Strategies, which briefed countries around the world. The establishment of Mawei Shipping School was the earliest attempt to introduce western scientific and technological system, which laid solid foundation for the development of science and technology in China in modem times. Evolution and Ethics and The Spirit of the Laws translated by Yan Fu have made Chinese realize the cruel reality of ＂natural selection, survival of the fittest＂ so that the reform movement was promoted in late Qing. Lin Shu, collaborated with scholars of shipping schools, translated a lot of western classics, showing Chinese scholars the western literature and consequently contributing a lot to the acquisition of cultural knowledge for the new generation in China. Moreover, Chen Jitong living in France introduced the traditional Chinese culture, facilitating the cultural communication between China and the West.
