Woman is treated as "the other" in patriarchal society. From the perspective of "one" and "the other", this paper will discuss how Maggie, the heroin in the novel The Mill on The Floss, tries to pursue the identity she expects in the patriarchal society, with its focus on the relationship between Maggie and her parents, her brother, Tom, and Bob, and Phillip, in order to demonstrate that Maggie is marginalized in the patriarchal society in which disqualifies her efforts to realize the identity she expects, and only in nature can she find out her true self.
