Dancing Skillfully with Iron——The Embodiment of "Three Beauties" in Xu Yuanchong's Poetry Translation from Chinese to English

许渊冲先生在中国古诗词英译的理论和实践方面均有颇高成就。在他提出的系统翻译理论中"意美"、"音美"、"形美"三美理论在译界影响深远,得到很多学者和译者的推崇,成为译文评判的重要标准。本文举例论证了许渊冲在中诗英译的过程中传达了原作的"意美"、"音美"和"形美"。

Xu Yuanehong has gotten great achievement in translating Chinese poetry into English both in theory and practice. Of all the translation theories he proposed, ＂three beauties＂, i.e. ＂beauty in sense＂, ＂beauty in sound＂ and ＂beauty in form＂ has been held in high esteem by translators and scholars. By analyzing the specific examples, this paper demonstrates that Xu＇s translation has well conveyed the original beauty of the poetry in sense, sound and form.
