Literary translation is an art of language and artistic recreation. In E-C literary translation, a translator is required not only to know English well but also to be a master of Chinese and well acquainted with the differences between these two languages and cultures. If a translator is too confined by the wording, syntax, grammar, etc. of the original, he or she will inevitably produce works with translationese instead of being loyal to the original. This paper aims to dwell on this problem with examples taken from the two Chinese translations of Pride and Prejudice in the hope of giving literary translators some inspirations.
