As a novel about the Russian concentration camp, Dovlatov＇s The Zone is markedly different from those of the same topic. It gives a new interpretation of the theme. Among those differences, the most obvious are its postmodernist metafiction mode of narration and its existentialist absurdity. In his novel, concentration camp is not a historical phenomenon of a specific period and of a specific nation, but a plausible outcome of both humanity and modern civilization, with potential of reoccurring at any time.
