C. T. Hsia＇s A History of Modern Chinese Literature is very important for updating of the concept and changing of the pattern of research of China's Mainland. It emphasizes literary standards and challenges the usual way of thinking as well as the definition of “classic” of China's Mainland. Moreover some core ideas of “Modernity” run through it. It has released our understanding and imagination on literary history as a potential impact again and again.
