《醒世姻缘传》是17世纪中叶用山东方言写成的一部长篇白话小说,该书艺术地再现了明末清初之际山东民俗文化的具体形态,特别是生动形象地描述了山东一带在诞生礼俗、婚姻礼俗等方面众多的谐音民俗事象。如以"笊篱"谐音"早离",寓意"早点离开"(死亡);以"羊"谐音"祥",寓意"吉祥"等等。这种谐音民俗以谐音象征的方式隐喻了人们的愿望和诉求,体现出民间对语言的魔力崇拜。

Marriage Destinies to Awaken the World （醒世姻缘传） is a colloquial story written in Shandong dialect in the 17th century. It artistically reappears Shandong folk culture＇s concrete shape in the end of the Ming dynasty. Especially it describes numerous homophonic folk phenomena in the birth and marital customs in Shandong area vividly. For example, as the homophony of ＂zhao li＂ （strainer） and ＂zao li＂ （leaving early,namely die early）, and so it implies that someone is going to die early by burning a strainer. Similarly because of the homophony of ＂yang＂ （sheep） and ＂xiang＂ （good luck）, therefore it symbolizes auspicious happiness by giving bride sheep in the marital customs. We think that homophonic folk phenomena in the book, express good wishes tactfully with homophonic symbolization, and manifest the folk to the language charm worship.
