The Interaction between the Imagined Feminity and Ethic Discourse——An Interpretation on Kleist's The Engagement in St. Domingo

Simon de Beauvoir argues that femininity is polarized by the patriarchy. It is shaped as the pure Virgin Mary or the tempting and devastating Eva. But Tony, the main female character in The Engagement in St. Domingo, is between these two feminine characters. Meanwhile, she embodies the interaction between the ethic and gender discourses at the end of 18th century. The specialized historical and cultural background should be considered in analysing the femininity polarization.
