An Initial Survey of YE Sheng's Border-governing Thought

明代疆域辽阔,在漫长的边境线上,200余年悠悠岁月里,烽火连绵,巩固国防一直是明王朝生死攸关的重大问题。叶盛所处的时代正是边患最为深重的时候,国家危在旦夕。叶盛上书献计求战,努力整顿边防,加强防御,积极治理边务和保卫北疆。在长达几十年尽心戎务过程中,根据以往治边经验,结合当时边防建设的新情况,提出了切实可行的治边主张,对明中期朝廷治理边疆产生了深远影响。

Since Ming dynasty has once enjoyed a vast territory, during its 200 years history of inces- sent wars, how to strengthen the national strength is a life-and-death problem to its government. The time YE Sheng has once lived in is the most critical moment for the disturbance on the borders. While the country was hung by a thread, YE Sheng submitted a written statement to the authority, provided his advice to consolidate the borders, strengthened the defence, actively administrated the frontier and guarded the northern border of the country. During his tens of years of hard work, based on the previ- ous experiences, as well as the new situation of border construction at that time, YE Sheng has put for- ward his own practical view of border-governing, which has exerted a far-reaching influence to territory administration in the Mid-Ming dynasty.
