The conceptual design of a parallel file system based on network workstation and the Network Parallel File System (NPFS) are introduced in this paper. Its design and implementation is discribed. NPFS makes use of message-passing libraries to provide a portable parallel file system which can execute over heterogeneous network environments or multiprocessor machines. It is effective way to solve the I/O bottlement problem in parallel processing. 1fig., 4refs.
