All Men Are Brothers, translated by Pearl S. Buck, is the earliest complete translation of Shui Hu Zhuan. Though ever harshly criticized by Chinese critics as "mistranslation", her version has been enjoying popularity among western readers for several decades. This paper aims to explore the factors contributing to its success by the analysis of the historical background and translation characteristics, and argues that it is the defamiliarization in the aspects of literary norm, narrative style, image construction and stylistic characteristics that attracts the attention of western readers.
