From 1965, the year when the Cultural Revolution was unleashed in China, to 1972, when the relationship between Japan and China was restored, the wave of the Cultural Revolution swept across Japan. The reports on China in the comprehensive journals of that period represents changing views on China, through which this paper will examine how the Cultural Revolution struck and impacted Japan. This paper will also review how the torch fire of the Cultural Revolution was relayed in Japan, from student movement to the working class, from Zenkyoto (Joint Struggle Committee of Students) to neo-leftists, from conflicts on campus to individual positional fight. This paper holds that studies of the impact of the Cultural Revolution on Japan should not be taken simply as a summary of sinological studies in a certain period, but should be brought into profound connection with Japanese national spirit in the post-war era.
