Ma Mingzhe Ping An's Five Years after IPO

On June 24th,2004,Ping An Insurance(Group) Company of China(601318.SH,02318.SH),became the only financial holding company then in China to be listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. During 2008,the year of Ping An's 20th anniversary,this company met many challenges.It had to face controversy over a $17 billion fundraising plan,a sky-high annual salary of chairman Ma Mingzhe, and big losses in Fortis investment.Ma Mingzhe,Ping An's founder,encountered suspicion and scorn, something he has never dealt with before.Even worse,with the coming of the financial crisis and the break up of many traditional financial institutions in the West,Ping An's long-established strategy on mixed operations was also questioned. For ten years,Ma Mingzhe has studied the issue of'Law,Ethics and Emotion'and the order of the three.Although Ma insists that the law is the basic principle of Ping An,China's reality has made him acknowledge that some aspects of Chinese customs have to be respected. Ma Mingzhe is eager to figure out what has happened in 2008.After these turbulence,the man admits that both Ping An and he himself have changed a lot.But,for him.there is one thing that will never change:the dream of Ping An being a financial holding company.Ma believes that it will eventually be realized in the future.
