In this paper, fracture modes of welded beam to column connections of steel moment frames damaged in the 1994 USA Northridge Earthquake and the 1995 Japan Hyogoken Nanbu Earthquake are introduced. Based upon the fracture behaviors of H beam to H column joints under low cyclic loading tests, it is pointed out that, the brittle fracture of welded beam to column connections significantly affected the bearing capacity of the joint; brittle fracture is mainly due to welding defects, problems shaded in connection details and structural design, and so on. Finally, the ways of improving the ductility of the beam to column joints and avoiding the defect sensitivity of the welded connections are discussed.
