The Washington Meeting was important in the history of modern China. Based on the reading and analysis of relevant news reports on contemporary Chinese newspapers such as Shen Boo (The Shun Pao), Chen Boo (The Morning Post), Minguo Ribao (The Republican Daily) and Dagong Boo (L'Impartial or Ta-Kung-Pao), this article looks into the activities of overseas Chinese in America. The author maintains that overseas Chinese in America were very concerned with the meeting and they were actively involved in a number of activities, such as asking the Sun Yat-Sen government based in Guangzhou to send delegates to attend the meeting, reporting the negotiation progress back to China without delay, contacting civilian delegates coming for the meeting, organising overseas students to refute harmful statements, monitoring the Chinese govemment delegates, refusing the suggestion to directly negotiate with the Japanese about the return of the Jiaoji railway ownership while raising fund to redeem the railway. Their efforts to some extent won the sympathy and support from the international community, which in turn had a positive impact on the Washington Meeting.
