Peter Hessler was sent to Fuling,a small town located along the Yangtze River,to work as a Peace Corps volunteer from 1996 to 1998.He was the town’s first resident from the United States in 50 years. Hessler’s experiences as an English and American literature teacher at the local college,and his life in Fuling during those two years,inspired the book River Town.
