Tomb Shuangdun-1 was explored through a salvage excavation in 2006 to 2008. This is a round earthen pit with a flight-shaped short passage. A quantity of distinctive complex vestiges were brought to light, and very rich funeral objects were unearthed, among which are bronze chime-bells, vessels, weapons, horse-and-chariot trappings, post-firing-painted pottery objects and high-temperature ones with geometric patterns, a number of rotten lacquered artifacts, a group of dragon-head chime stones, and various fine jades. As known from the inscriptions on some bronzes, the tomb-owner must have been Bai, the ruler of the Zhongli State, who was entombed roughly in the mid and late Spring-and-Autumn period. The excavation evidenced further the existence of the Zhongli State in the middle Huaihe River valley and provided valuable material for researching into the history and pedigree of royal fatuity of the State and the regional features of the Huaiyi culture.
