This paper examines "Deity" and "God" in Shen Congwen and William Faulkner's novels and their relationship with their aesthetics. Conspicuous pantheism pervades both writers with "Deity" as a key word for Shen to express his literary ideal and "God" as the footstone for William Faulkner to build his literary world. Shen Congwen's pantheism has the typical feature of nature worship, whereas Faulkner's has the tendency of religious mysticism based on the concept of God. For all the differences, the two concepts have been endowed with similar moral and aesthetic significance such as love and beauty.
