现代汉语时间词"后来"来源于古汉语中同形的动词性偏正短语"后来","后来"的词汇化机制是转指,即动词性短语指称化的结果,转指对"后来"的词汇化起到十分重要的作用。"后来"词化后,其句法功能由普通名词演变为时间词(时间名词),功能上可以作主语、宾语、定语和状语,语义上可表示在过去某一时间之后的时间。

In Mandarin, ＂houlai＂ is a temporal word. It comes from the verbal phrase ＂houlai＂ in ancient Chinese, which has the same form with it. The lexicalizing mechanism of ＂houlai＂ is transferred-reference the consequence caused by the designation of the verbal phrases. As an expressing device, transferred-reference played a vital role in the process of the lexicalization of ＂houlai＂. After ＂houlai＂ became fixed as a single word,its grammatical relation quality also changed as follows： from a common noun to a temporal word （a sub-category of noun）. ＂Houlai＂ functions as Subject, Object, Attribute and Adverbial modifier. Semantically,it refers to a span of time-starting at a time （point） in the past.
