Nostromo, one of Conrad's representative works, is called "the greatest canvas" by Conrad himself. Nostromo is broad in scope, complicated in structure. There are various kinds of characters in the novel such as the American capitalists, the European colonialists and the aboriginals. Based on the analysis of the characters in the novel, the present paper brings to light Conrad's complex attitudes towards the British Empire in the novel and how Conrad reestablishses the circumstances of the the British Empire.
