John Updike, adopting a feminist stand, composes a prequel to Shakespeare' s Hamlet --Gertrude and Claudius. Updike reconstructs a new text from the feminist perspective, shifting the concern from masculinity to femininity. Gertrude becomes a decent pursuer of marriage liberty incarnate. However, she is a pawn for the male, especially the politician, to achieve his political target in her new marriage to Claudius, no less than to King Hamlet.
