A Study on the Number of Nanjing’s Population Before it became Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s Capital

太平军占领南京前,南京城原有人口约54万-90万人,到达南京的军人及其家属约13万-15万人。但至太平天国奠都前,战争、政策失误等导致人口减少约14.5万余人,因而奠都前南京城总人口大约在52.5万-90.5万之间。

Before captured by the Taiping Army, Nanjing has a population of 540 thousands to 900 thousands presumably. The number of army men and their dependents who arrived in Nanjing is about 130 thousands to 150 thousands. There is a 145 thousands fall in population resulted from the war and policy faults. Therefore, the number of Nanjing＇ s population before it became Taiping Heavenly Kingdom＇ s capital is 525 thousands to 905 thousands.
