By examining such basic concepts in cognitive linguistics as categorization, prototype theory and metaphor, the paper illustrates that in English vocabulary teaching for English majors, it is crucial to lay emphasis on basic category terms, extended meanings of polysemic words and cultural connotations of metaphorical expressions. In conclusion, the paper suggests that the application of some theoretical insights of cognitive linguistics to vocabulary teaching can help develop students＇ cog- nitive awareness, make students grasp the regularity and motivation of linguistic structures and thus stimulate English vocabulary teaching.
