Abstract The historical evolution of the definition of information science is summarized and analysed.The relationship of information science with library science and communication studies,and the disciplinary nature of information science are studied in detail.The development history,the main theoretical viewpoints and the impacts on the trends of information science of cognitive viewpoint in information science are summarized.
