Since the novel Jane Eyre was born, readers of different times and countries have cast the words of sympathy and eulogy toward the heroine of Jane Eyre. And the madwoman Bertha has been considered as a symbol of ugly vicious women. However, through careful analysis, we will find that Bertha, like Jane, is the victim of the male-dominated society and the rebel against the male oppression. But compared with Jane' s resistance, hers is bolder, more direct and more cynical. Therefore, the image of Bertha enriches and gives prominence to the rebel theme of the novel.
