Through his in-depth analysis of the photographs, writings, and drawings of the Barcelona Pavilion, combined with on-site observations at the reconstructed building, Robin Evans explores a series of paradoxical properties hidden in this important work by Mies van der Rohe: symmetry vs. asymmetry, logic of structure vs. logic of appearance, extensive space vs. closed space, suppression of mass vs. manipulation of light, reflections that break thing up vs. reflections that create coherence, etc., and proposes an alternative interpretation of the politics of the pavilion - its beauty distracts Mies and his contemporaries from politics and violence.
