Interpersonal Analysis on Changing Process of Character's Interrelation:Kate Chopin's The Awakening

借助韩礼德的人际功能学说,对美国女作家凯特.肖邦的小说《觉醒》中主人公埃德娜与情人罗伯特之间的关系变化过程进行解析。通过对埃德娜觉醒前后与罗伯特的人际功能分析,指出,人际分析能成功地阐释人物间关系的变化过程,并为小说的美学与文学意义提供并赋予更深的内涵。

This thesis makes an analysis of the changing relation between Edna, the heroine of The Awakening, and her lover,Robert,from the perspective of M. A. K Halliday＇ s interpersonal function. Taking a close examination of linguistic features before and after her awakening, the study demonstrates that Halliday＇ s interpersonal function can function as a useful tool in revealing changing process of relation between characters. The study also concludes that interpersonal analysis effectively sheds fresh insight into the aesthetic effects and the literary significance of the literary work under study.
